NOTE: I read this book and responded immediately by translating into English assuming that the author’s foreword allowed anyone to do this and based on public statements attributed to him inviting widespread dissemination, and interpreting it as a waiver of his rights. However, the author has noted that translation requires his prior permission. With apologies to the author for issuing a translation without their permission, the previous translation uploaded here is hereby withdrawn. If you are looking for a version of the translation uploaded by “esvin.martese” on Archive.org, scroll below to end of post. Meanwhile see the official translation of the book here.
Somewhere in mid-July, I read Devanura Mahadeva’s book – in one sitting – and was keen on working on an English translation of the book quite immediately. It took me about 6 evening sittings of few intense hours to complete; not because the translation was easy, but perhaps because of the elegant simplicity of the arguments being made and the clarion call he issues to the Wider Hindu community (ವಿಶಾಲ ಹಿಂದೂ ಸಮಾಜ) and especially to those in this wider Hindu community who are disturbed by the regression towards ancient darkness in the dominant public discource today.
Even as I was working on the translation, I was updating the PDF online and that is the reason perhaps for multiple versions floating around. The final one I released on 24 July had the filename v.29 in it and that is to be considered the absolute final version.
The translation was provided free and a translator’s note appears in the first few pages clarifying that the translation was not official, nor did it have the permission/approval of the author. The reason for sharing the translation for free here on my personal blog was to make it available to the wider English-speaking non-Kannada audience who may be interested. And boy was there interest! My blog never having crossed more than a 300 views in an entire month clocked >3000 in few days! So many people downloaded, shared and passed it around – enough to serve the author’s stated purpose to create a dialogue on this topic, and of course fulfilling my purpose of sharing it with non-Kannada audience.
However, Devanura Mahadeva shared with me over phone and later in person, that this widespread availability of this translation could disturb ongoing official translation and publication efforts. I have great admiration for him and his work, and have complied with his request by removing the download of the translation. (Update: The official translation is now out & is available at your local book store.
That said, the work deserves a wider dialogue, discussion, critique and engagement – which I hope to do through (a) putting out a book review publicly, and (b) writing an annotated reading of the book with extracted translation of key parts – both projects now ongoing.
[Preserved as an archive of the effort]Devanuru Mahadeva’s recent book has generated wide interest. It is currently selling in Kannada and has an interesting publication model. I believe English translation is in the works, but thought I’d have a go anyway at the translation as I read along. As per my knowledge this is the first English translation of this work in public domain.
Version used for translation was originally published by Abhiruchi Prakashana (Mysore) in June 2022 with 8+64 pages and priced at a princely sum of Rs. 40. Also used another version published by Navakarnataka Publications (Bengaluru) with 70 pages.
Translation completed July 23; if you downloaded any of the previous 28 versions before this date, you can download v.29 below (last updated 24 July 2022, 1408 hrs); version numbers in included in filename from v.28 onwards; previous versions carried a wrong email ID: correct one is daktre AT outlook.com (now updated)
DOWNLOAD WITHDRAWN UPON AUTHOR’s REQUEST
UPDTATE (5 August, 2022): Someone shared with me the upload of my translated version on the Internet Archive. The uploader too alludes to Devanura Mahadeva’s declaration that he is freeing the publication from copyright. https://archive.org/details/englishv.-29
